Green water in ponds is caused by algae, microscopic single celled plants which will thrive in the water conditions produced in a fish pond. All ponds with fish require biological filtration but the main by-product from the filter is nitrate, not harmful to fish, but an excellent food for plants. So the algae thrive and the water turns green. Getting the water clear again requires the installation of a correctly sized Ultra Violet clarifier. Allow 10 watts per 1000 gallons (4500L)
UV Lights are an important part of the koi keepers system.
